The Lady or the Tiger

I wrote this back in college. It was a continuation of a unfinished story we listened to in my screenwriting class and we had to continue the story with what we thought would happen next. This is a story of a man who falls in love with a princess and they live in a city where the king believes in fate. Here's how I thought the story continued...

The Lady or the Tiger
Love is a mysterious thing. As glances were transmitted back and forth between man and princess, princess and man, nothing but trust longed within the man’s eyes and spirit. The arena stood still – no sound to be recognized. The man takes his first steps with utter confidence walking towards the door the princess had pointed out. The Princess rises from her throne ever so slightly, tilts her head high, and watches her love walk towards the destiny she had chosen for him.
As he reaches out his arms to open the door on the right, he hears slight scratching at the door. The man’s hand, being inches away from the knob, triggers backward.  His knees turn weak. As he turns to the woman whom he trusted and loved with all his heart, all he can see is a conniving and selfish beast sitting on the throne of royalty. Looking into her eyes, he cannot seem to understand why she had betrayed him. He stared into her eyes and waited – waited for an answer of reason. With no expression, she looked down upon him. He then walks towards the left door. As the man reaches his arm out to open the door, the princess leaps from her seat and before she can say a word, the man turns the knob and a tiger leaps on the man and shreds him to pieces.
Through her confusion, she shrieks, glances at her father and before she can get another word through her lips, the king says: “every punishment comes with an option due to fate, however in this case, the crime of loving my daughter is one that is unacceptable. Death is the only faith this man had.” Both doors consisted of tigers defeating the purpose of fate. As the tiger devoured the love of her life right before her eyes, the princess, astonished, walked slowly towards the end of the balcony. Climbing one leg after the other, she stood on the ledge of the balcony and took one last look at her father. The princess fell backwards into the arena plummeting to her death and to be eaten by the beast that had ripped the man into pieces.
